Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Action

THE CONTEXT

Sustainable soil management lies at the heart of SOHAI's mission. Healthy soils are the foundation of resilient farming systems, improved food security, and resilient rural livelihoods. However, currentlty the world is experiencing unprecedened rate of soil degradation majorly driven by unsustainable land use practices, agricultural intensification and climate change. However, smallholder farmers particularily those in developing countries including Uganda suffer the most from the effects of soil degradation. This is becuse agriculture remains a key economic activity in developing countries including Uganda, employing millions of people. The issue of soil degradation in Uganda is prominent. Currently, close to half of Uganda's arable land is experiencing rapid soil degradation, with increasing warnings of further degradation if immediate actions are not taken. As such, business as usual (BAU) is not an option, and stakeholders must join hands to adress the issue of soil degradation urgency, and a common agenda. As SOHAI, we are on ground joining efforts to adress this crisis.

OUR RESPONSE

 

🌿 Resilient Sensitive and Demand Driven Capacity Building 

• Train smallholder farmers, cooperatives, farmer groups, and local extension agents in sustainable and climate-resilient and climate smart agricultural practices tailored to their needs and contex.

• Build practical knowledge and skills of smallhoder farmers to engage in micro-level economic decision making processes for better resource allocation, soil management and resource efficiency

• Strengthen farmers' capacity to improve on farm productivity while sustaining livelihoods and safeguarding the environment (social, economic and environmental sustainability).

 

💡 Participatory Innovation Development and Dissemination

• Support the co-creation and development of locally driven social and technical innovations.

• Promote Participatory Action Research (PAR) through and Living Labs, trandiscplinary collaborations, peer-to-peer learning and farmer managed field schools to support collective problem analysis and identify practical solutions to problems affecting soils and interconnected farm issues.

 

🌾 Agroecology & Conservation Agriculture

• Empowering smallholder farmers to practice and sustain agroecological principles and conservation agriculture practices for farm and landscape resilence

• Supporting gender transformative agroecology (GTAE)

 

🤝 Institutional Capacity Strengthening

• Strengthen the capacity of local institutions, community organisations, and agricultural stakeholders to support sustainable soil management.

• Foster long-term partnerships that promote resilient farming systems and sustainable rural development.
