Soil Observatory

CONTEXT

SOHAI acknowledges that understanding the existing state of our soils is crucial evidence decision making and development of support tools for sustainable land management. Indeed, without accurate information on soil nutrient availability, organic matter composition and other biochemical properties, it is practically difficult to provide precise technical guidance or implement appropriate soil management programs. SOHAI promotes evidence-based soil management by supporting soil monitoring, assessment, and knowledge sharing adhering to the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Resusable (FAIR) principles and guidelines. Through our Soil Health Observatory, we work to generate reliable soil information that empowers farmers, researchers, development partners, and policymakers to make informed decisions.

OUR RESPONSE

🌱 Participatory Soil Health Assessment

  • Engage farmers, soil scientists, extension workers, and lead farmers in participatory soil health assessments.

  • Use both locally available and advanced soil monitoring tools to evaluate soil conditions.

  • Build community capacity to mobilise local resources for sustained soil health monitoring.

📊 Soil Data Management & Knowledge Sharing

  • Document and archive periodic soil assessment reports.

  • Promote open access to soil information for communities, researchers, development organisations, and government agencies.

  • Support evidence-based planning and sustainable land management.

🌍 Access to Soil Information

  • Facilitate access to global, national, and local soil databases and repositories.

  • Improve the availability of reliable soil information for research, planning, and agricultural advisory services.

  • Encourage the use of soil data to guide sustainable farming decisions.

🔬 Soil Testing & Analysis

  • Collect and analyse soil samples for farmers, businesses, institutions, and government agencies.

  • Provide accurate soil health information to support nutrient management and sustainable agricultural practices.

  • Generate recommendations that improve soil productivity, crop performance, and long-term land stewardship.
