Civic Engagement and Advocacy for Soil Health

THE CONTEXT

Effective policies are essential for promoting sustainable soil health management at local, national, and global levels. However, in many countries, including Uganda, existing policies often do not sufficiently address the challenges affecting soil health. This is mainly attributed to limited political commitment, inadequate funding, fragmented programmes, and insufficient evidence-based information. SOHAI works to bridge this gap by promoting evidence-informed policy development, strengthening stakeholder collaboration, and advocating for sustainable agricultural practices through the following interventions:

🤝 Multi-Actor Participation

• Mobilise and bring together farmers, researchers, policymakers, civil society organisations, and development partners around a shared agenda for sustainable soil management.

• Advocate for the integration of both scientific and indigenous knowledge into mainstream agricultural extension services, national programmes and frameworks.

• Promote inclusive dialogue to strengthen collaboration across sectors.

 

🌍 Strategic Partnerships & Policy Advocacy

• Collaborate with like-minded civil society organisations, research institutions, think tanks, and environmental advocates to advocate for programs and policies that adress the interconnected issues contributing to soil degradation.

• Build strategic alliances that amplify advocacy efforts for sustainable agriculture and soil health.

 

📚 Knowledge Generation & Evidence Synthesis

• Review and synthesize the latest scientific research, policy reports, and technical publications on soil health and sustainable agriculture.

• Translate complex scientific findings into accessible information for policymakers, practitioners, and communities.

• Promote evidence-based decision-making through knowledge sharing.

 

🔬 Research & Policy Publications

• Conduct empirical research on sustainable agriculture, soil health, and rural livelihoods to inform policy and practice.

• Publish policy briefs, technical reports, peer-reviewed articles, and other knowledge products.

• Generate practical evidence that informs policy development and programme implementation.

 

🏛️ Policy Engagement & Public Awareness

• Engage policymakers through national and international forums, agricultural exhibitions, conferences, and stakeholder dialogues.

• Support media engagement and public awareness initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture.

• Advocate for policies that strengthen climate resilience, soil conservation, and food security.
