Circular Economy

THE CONTEXT

SOHAI recognizes the growing need to transition from high-input agricultural systems to a more sustainable and resilient one, that leverages locally available resources including renewable biological resources. Circular economy is increasingly being recognise as one of the pathways to achieve the envisioned transition. Circular economy or Bioeconomy offers multiple benefits including, reducing avoidable waste, creating green jobs, improving soil fertility and and promoting resource use efficiency while creating numerous economic opportunities for multiple actors across the bioeconomy value chains. Despite the large amounts of organic waste generated in Uganda, transformation of these organic biomass mostly agricultural waste into beneficial end products is still underdeveloped. This can be partly attributed to technical, financial, and institutional constraints. SOHAI works to accelerate the valorisation and the transition to circular-based agricultural systems through the following interventions.

OUR RESPONSE

🌿 Organic Biomass Valorization

  • Promote the productive use of locally available organic waste and biomass including farm residues.

  • Empower farmers and businesses to engage in the transformation of agricultural residues and other farm waste into valuable resources that can be used for soil nutrient enrichment.

  • Train farmers, youth groups, and start-ups in organic biomass recycling techniques.

  • Support the production and use of biomass beneficial end products including biofertilizers, biopesticides, compost, and organic manure.

  • Participatory mapping of existing biomass stocks to understand their useability, availability, ease of transformation, competing uses and technological requirements.

🤝 Partnerships & Knowledge Sharing

  • Strengthen networking and collaboration among farmers, the private sector, government institutions, and development partners for scaling biomass valorization and improving value chains.

  • Facilitate knowledge exchange, resource mobilisation, and innovation.

💼 Green Entrepreneurship

  • Equip women, youth and home grown startups with entrepreneurship and business management skills on green jobs.

  • Support the development of viable business models for the commercialising of bio-based products.

💡 Access to Green Finance

  • Facilitate access to start-up and seed capital for investments in small to medium scale renewable and circular economy technologies.

  • Support innovators and entrepreneurs in developing sustainable and bankable circular enterprises.
