Cultivating Transformation

WHO WE ARE

Who We Are

Soil Health Action Initiative (SOHAI) is a registered non-profit, Community-based Organisation (CBO) that got registered in 2025 with Kwania District Local Government. SOHAI majorly focuses on promoting sustainable soil and land use practices that supports agroecosystem biodiversity, soil health and resilient rural livelihoods.

WHY WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SOILS

Why We Are Concerned About Soil

As the Global Population is expected to hit 9.5 bn by 2050, the demand for food will more than double. Meeting this demand will certainly exacerbate the current pressures on soils for food and feeds production hence potentially furthering soil degradation and biodiversity losses. Healthy soils are fundamantal to global food security with, an estimated 95% world's food production directly depending on soils. Soil also privide habitat for organisms, provison of ecosystem services and carbon storage. However currently, over 25% of global soils have eroded, with a projected degradation level to increase up to 75% globally by 2050 if no action is taken as warned by IPCC. Inherently, 16M Square kilometres of land cover equivalent to the size of South America shows continued sign of degradation. This current trend places great risk to developing countries particularly in Africa where up to about 80% of the population depends on small-scale farming. Yet, climate change has exacerbated soil degradation, ecosystem erosion and other soil related challenges. While climate change effects and soil degrqdqtion is already being felt in many countries, smallholder farmers particularly those in developing countries including Uganda who derive their livelihoods from small-scale agriculture are at high risk of effects of soil degradation and climate change. The Soil Health Action Initiative is addressesing this interconnecetd challenges by promoting holistic interventions packages as refelected in our thematic areas.
